What Is Slurry Seal?
Slurry seal is a cold mix asphalt resurfacing treatment consisting of an aggregate, a special liquid asphalt emulsion, water, and cement. All of the ingredients are mixed at a specifically calibrated rate using either a truck-mounted, self-containing mixing unit, or continuous running machine with multiple support units.
Slurry seal is not a normal pavement sealer. It is actual cold-mix asphalt designed to be installed on existing pavement at a thickness from ¼-inch to 3/8-inch. It creates excellent bonding and adhesion and is approved by nearly all DOT agencies, including PennDOT.
A ¼-inch slurry seal treatment is approximately 1/3 the cost of a typical mill and pave project, which is typically 1 ½-inches thick. Slurry seal rarely conflicts with existing structures and provides a new pavement surface exhibiting some of the highest achievable skid resistance. Furthermore, slurry seal is cured in only three to five hours like standard pavement sealer.
When combined with the proper preparations, using slurry seal at the proper time during a pavement's life can extend its usable surface life for many years. Slurry seal is used in more than 40 countries around the world. It is environmentally safer than traditional pavements and is one of the most cost-effective maintenance options available. We've been installing slurry seal for more than 20 years!
Slurry seal is not meant to replace a standard hot-mix asphalt overlay. It can be compared to chip sealing without the loose stones and fatty tar areas that can be dangerous. Slurry seal should be used as a maintenance tool to extend the life of existing pavement.
The cost of slurry seal projects varies greatly depending on the coverage area, with the cost of a large area being more than the cost of a smaller area. Get in touch with us today for a FREE estimate on your slurry seal project!
What Is Micro-Surfacing?
Micro-surfacing is similar to slurry seal with the main difference being the liquid asphalt emulsion, which has added polymer modifiers to accelerate curing time and enhance durability. This enables the micro-surfacing to be used in heavy-duty or high-traffic volume situations.
Micro-surfacing was originally developed for Germany's Autobahn and is still a maintenance tool to preserve the roadway's pavement surface, along with roadways around the world. It is so widely used due to its ability to be used as a leveling course or to fill rutted pavement of up to ¾-inch before installing the finish course. Its fast cure time also allows these applications to be performed right before the finish course installation, saving time.
After micro-surfacing, a surface can be opened to traffic in a little as 45 minutes for straight traffic and one hour for turning traffic. Contact Peter J Caruso & Sons Inc today for a FREE estimate on your micro-surfacing project!
