Micro-Surfacing in Pittsburgh, PA
Peter J. Caruso & Sons, Inc. is a commercial asphalt company that is proud to provide slurry seal and micro-surfacing in Pittsburgh, PA. These two impressive asphalt resurfacing treatments help you regain control of your surfaces so they can stand the test of time.
What Is Slurry Seal?
Slurry Seal is a cold mix asphalt resurfacing treatment made up of an aggregate, a special liquid asphalt emulsion, water, and cement. These ingredients are mixed at a specifically calibrated rate with either a truck-mounted, self-contained mixing unit or a continuous run machine with multiple support units.
Slurry Seal is not a typical pavement sealer, however. Instead, it is actual cold-mix asphalt pavement designed to be installed, from a thickness of ¼-inch to 3/8-inch, onto existing pavements. This seal maintains excellent bonding and adhesion qualities and is approved by nearly all departments of transportation agencies, including PennDOT.
With an approximate cost that is 1/3 of the cost of a typical mill and pave job, which has the recommended minimum thickness of 1 ½-inches, a ¼-inch treatment of a slurry seal rarely conflicts with existing structures. Additionally, it provides an actual new pavement surface that exhibits a skid resistance level that is one of the highest achievable using any type of paving material. Furthermore, Slurry Seal has a cure time of three to five hours, which is similar to a pavement sealer.
When combined with the proper preparatory work, such as crack filling larger cracks, patching potholes, or fixing base failure areas, an application of Slurry Seal at the correct time in a pavement’s lifetime can extend the usable surface life of the pavement for years to come.
The Popular Choice from Around the Globe
Slurry Seal is a global pavement maintenance tool utilized in more than 40 countries around the world, along with many states across the United States. It is environmentally safer than traditional pavements and may actually be the most cost-effective pavement maintenance option currently available. The team at our commercial asphalt company has been installing Slurry Seal for more than 20 years on projects including municipal roadways, school parking lots, shopping center parking lots, and various commercial parking lots and cemetery roads.
This product is not intended to replace a standard hot-mix asphalt overlay. It is a surface treatment that is comparable to chip sealing or “tar and chip”, just without all of the loose stones and fatty tar areas that can create hazardous road conditions due to loss of traction. Slurry Seal should be used as a maintenance tool to maximize the value of an existing pavement by extending the time that a more intensive repair would be required.
Due to the large area of coverage that could be completed in a day, the cost will vary with each project respectively. The unit price for a large area will be considerably less than that of a smaller area. What Is Micro-Surfacing?
Micro-surfacing asphalt is very similar to a Slurry Seal. The main differences are in the liquid asphalt emulsion, which has polymer modifiers added to accelerate curing time and to enhance durability. These properties enable the micro-surfacing to be utilized in a heavy duty or higher traffic volume situation.
Originally developed for use on Germany’s Autobahn, micro-surfacing is still in use as a maintenance tool in the preservation of the roadway’s pavement surface as well as the surfaces of roads located throughout the globe. Part of the reason for this is micro-surfacing ability to be used as a leveling course or to fill rutted pavement of up to ¾-inch prior to installing the finish course. The fast cure time also enables these applications to be done right before the finish course installation, which helps save contractors time. A surface treated with micro-surfacing can be open to traffic in as little time as 45 minutes for straight traffic and one hour for turning traffic.
